THE GREAT EDIT DEBATE – What should go on a photo website?

Posted in Our Humble Opinions, Uncategorized by K2Creative on May 8, 2013

I used to be a minimalist.  ESPECIALLY when it came to photography websites.  Less was more and more was too much.  If a client wanted to see the work, they’d just call in the portfolio.  The website is just a taste of dessert, not the full slice.  Right?

Things…well, they’ve changed.  Ad agencies and magazines still call in books but those calls are fewer and further between.  These days, we get a ton of requests for pdfs of certain styles, or specific genres, etc.  In addition, some projects are confirmed solely by what clients see on the web.*

The debate over what should go on our site has gone on for awhile.  And at this point, we’ve changed positions.

We’re redoing our website.  And our new belief is “More is more.”  Our photographers have a slew of work we want potential clients to see, even if they don’t have time to look at a physical portfolio.  We might be biased, but we just can’t get enough of the imagery, especially the new stuff we’re adding.  These are still VERY tight edits-but they are good edits.   We’re putting it all out there in expectation that we may never get the opportunity to send a book.  And if  we do…well, that’s just icing on the cake.

See below for some of the edits…Can’t even see straight anymore!  Our new website will be done soon.  That is, if my eyes don’t fall out first.

*Sidenote:  A few photographers have mentioned forgoing hard copy portfolios all-together in lieu of ipad presentations.   My response – absolutely NOT.  No way Jose.  Not at this agency.   There is still so much to be said about how an image looks and feels in print.  Nuances that can go unnoticed on the web stand out to me in print.  And the flow of an artists portfolio…its still important.  At least to us.
