Guilty Pleasures – Matthew Tischler’s “Screen Series”

Let me start this off by saying I don’t know the following photographer, and have no hidden agenda here.  I just feel strongly about bringing good work (photography, design, jewelry, etc) to the forefront whenever I can.  And sheesh – if someone liked what I did, I would love for them to give me a shout out!

I know I’m a photo agent.  I know the photographers I work with are AMAZING.  But this post isn’t about them.
It’s about someone I came across accidently – Matthew Tischler, a  NY based photographer and lovely guy shooting personal and commissioned work.

There’s one particular section of Matthew’s site that intrigues me – his Screen Series (pictures included).  Here’s what he has to say about the series in his artist statement:

The effect of the grid used in the Untitled Screen Series is such that images are divided, pixelated, and filtered. Subjects and figures are therefore broken apart and reconstructed in such a way that they are both integrated into their environment and isolated within it. None of the subjects in these photographs have any discernable facial features or characteristics. The screen that is imposed over each tableau subjugates their identities. Richly saturated colors and flattened space create alluring vistas that seem to resemble video stills.

Here’s what I have to say about it –  L.O.V.E.

His graphic sensibility mixed with a softness caused by the screen and depth perception DO create a video “still” look – and the pops are color throughout make my heart swoon.

I don’t know why, but for me, these bring up a nostalgic feeling.  Childhood, love, simplicity?  Whatever it is, the images speak to me in a manner I can’t put my finger on.

So go out there and get yourself a print.  While you’re at it, feel free to pick one up for me as well.  I did some research and several of the prints are available at 20×200.com.   But if you purchase from Tischler direct, you’ll get true photographic chromogenic color prints made from the original 35mm negatives (non-digital).

This guy is definitely on my love list.  Stay tuned next time for more “guilty pleasures” – I think there are a few jewelry pieces I can no longer live without.  And a blog by another photo agent that speaks volumes about this business – the good, the bad, and the ugly.
